Nathan Watts

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Nathan Andrew Watts, who succumbed to the relentless grip of depression on October 14, 2023, at the age of 32. He leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family and friends and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Nathan was born to David Earl Watts and Michelle Therese Mayer on September 10, 1991, in Sandy, Utah, the third of five sons. Nathan was a bright, energetic child who showed an interest in building from an early age, shadowing his father and grandfather and eagerly helping them on various projects, often crafting tools and projects from everyday items found around the house. As he grew, so did his ability to create items from wood and metal, including a cannon crafted from maple wood and a sword expertly forged from discarded metal. He surprised friends and family with his ability to transform ordinary objects into extraordinary creations.

As he became older, Nathan explored other interests as well. While in elementary school, Nathan studied violin and piano and sang with the Salt Lake Children’s Choir. He loved Harry Potter and, as a proud Gryffindor, could answer any question he was asked about his favorite fantasy world. He also enjoyed his time as a Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Life Scout.

After graduating from Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah, Nathan embarked on a career in cabinetry, making his mark with an array of projects across the state of Utah. His most distinguished achievement in this area was the woodwork he contributed to the re-creation of the Globe Theater in Cedar City Utah, a cornerstone of Southern Utah University's annual Shakespeare Festival. His skill and dedication to his craft led him to create cabinets for many fine homes in Northern Utah and unique, individualized items for family and friends. Colleagues held him in high regard for his unwavering dedication to his craft, recognizing the value he added to their companies throughout the years.

Nathan loved the outdoors and found pleasure in camping, fishing, and prospecting for gold in the mountains of Utah. When at home, Nathan enjoyed smoking meat and barbecuing for family and friends and immersing himself in the worlds of Harry Potter and Star Trek. Most uniquely, Nathan had a passion for fire spinning, an art which allowed him to make many friends and which he enjoyed sharing with others.

Though Nathan had many interests in life, his greatest joys were found with his family and friends. The three best days of his life were his wedding day, when he married his wife, Mariah Noel Case, and the days when his daughter, Doree Lynn Watts, and son, Orin Russell David Watts, were born.

Nathan is survived by his wife Mariah Case, son Orin, daughter Doree, parents David and Michelle Watts, and his brothers Michael (Jodi) Watts, Stephen Watts, Matthew Watts, and Daniel Watts, as well as two nieces, a nephew and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 at 11:00 am at Larkin Sunset Gardens,1950 E. Dimple Dell Road, Sandy, UT. The service will be preceded by an opportunity to visit with family and friends at 10:00 am prior to the services. Nathan will be interred in Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery alongside other family members.
