Nathaniel Thomas Lucas

Obituary Photo for Nathaniel Thomas Lucas < >

Nathaniel Thomas Lucas, 42, passed away Sunday July 16th in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was transferred by ambulance to LDS Hospital because he could not breathe. By the time they got to the hospital his situation had deteriorated. Shortly after his arrival he went into cardiac arrest. The medical team worked diligently to try and resuscitate him to no avail. The cause of death was Acute Lobal Pneumonia.

He was born June 21, 1981, to Daniel Thomas Lucas and Carolyn Stucki Lucas in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the second son – just 15 months younger than his big brother. When Nathan was five, he got a younger brother through his mom’s marriage to CT Thomas. Jeremy, Nathan, and Matthew became the three musketeers. Each being all boy with a love of family.

While his legal name is Nathaniel he was also known as Nathan, Nate, Nate Dogg, Nate the Skate, Hollywood, and Brother. To his mom he was always Nathan. Nathan lived life with passion. He was his own person living life on his terms. Nathan would write sayings in his notebook, on his artwork, longboard, backpack, etc. of how he approached life; “The only way to live is to be full of life and live it to its fullest”, “Live Life”, “Don’t be a sheep”, “Be authentically you”. Nathan’s robust personality, love of life and the fact that he was nonjudgmental naturally drew people to him. He was a leader at work and at play.

Following high school Nathan began what would be a career in concrete. His first job was working for Kenny Seng Construction where he learned the ins and outs of working concrete under CT Thomas. During his career he worked and led crews for several different construction companies. He mastered flat work, curb and gutter, curb wall, walls, tilt up buildings and parking structures. He was a hard worker and good finisher.

Nathan loved the outdoors and was at home in nature. He loved fishing, hiking, trail running, snowboarding, and more recently looking for interesting rocks. He was a talented photographer who was able to catch amazing shots of nature. In his photography he was particularly good at composition and utilizing light. His creativity extended to drawing and painting.

Nathan’s ultimate passion was longboarding. He spent hours perfecting his craft and looking for opportunities to ride. He would ride down places like Capitol Hill, Guardsman Pass, South Mountain, and Wasatch Blvd. It has been said that he actually passed cars. Riding his longboard at such a high rate of speed required all his focus, which quieted his mind. He loved the freedom he felt while riding.

Above all Nathan loved spending time with his son Drevan. He was so proud of him! It did not really matter what they did as long as they were together. Nathan could be seen at Drevan’s hockey games at ice level walking around the glass filming him. Nathan’s cheering and encouragement could be heard above the entire crowd.

In his early twenties Nathan got a tattoo of a nautical star on the top of his back. Renderings of the nautical star are found in his multiple books of drawings, on his longboard, helmet, backpack, the bedroom mirror, or about anywhere. The nautical star symbolizes protection, guidance, and good luck, or metaphorically represents finding one’s way home. Nathan has gone home.

Nathan is survived by his mother Carolyn Stucki Thomas and stepfather CT Thomas of Draper, UT, father Daniel Lucas of Brandon, FL, brothers Jeremy Lucas (Jami) of Eagle Mountain, UT and Matthew Thomas of Draper, UT, sister Keli Lucas Battles (Will), of Byron, GA, son Drevan Lucas of Tooele, UT, 2 nieces, 4 nephews, several aunts, an uncle, and many cousins.

A viewing will be held on Saturday July 29, 2023, at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road, Sandy, Utah from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the same location.

So very sorry for your loss. The obituary was so well written. It sounds like he is a very talented man, just like his Mom and a work ethic just like CT. Sending love and prayers to you and your family.

Our deepest condolences. We loved Nathan in our family and was adored by us and my boys.. Here’s the post on FB we made of our memories with him. He has been and will be missed. .

Nathan Lucas “Lucas” the father of my nephew Drevan Lucas and the FUNcle to my children. Will always be loved and cherished.
For the past 16 years, the Lucas I choose to remember is the guy in his prime of life, who loved an adventure, who loved life bigger than life itself and who was the never ending energizing bunny. Everyone knew when Lucas was around, he had a loud jovial voice, laugh, high energy or a funny joke. He loved a beer or whiskey which seem to add to the volume of his voice or laugh. Lucas was a prankster and always had something up his sleeve.
We were able to travel together from Europe, Mexico, Tennessee, and Southern Utah. I loved seeing your eyes light up from learning something new or meeting new people. You cracked us up with your nude statue pictures in Europe you took and would “share” via air drop with random strangers nearby. Watching people perk up made us laugh for years and years. Also, Walking around in Europe, getting a group of us to do air kicks was another hilarious moment that we all laugh about and have hilarious pictures of, all having your personality shine.
I loved being you and Hana’s water girl for your 100 mile race in Tennessee. Then exploring in Nashville. The sunset with Hattie B’s chicken, and air kicks on the bridge is a moment that is engrained in my heart forever.
Lucas, loved trail running, skateboarding, snowboarding and said yes to any adventure.
You were one of the first guys I met that could rock our favorite color purple.
Your son loved and adored you. Loved repeating your famous phrases and living by your going big or go home attitude. “Send it.”
We appreciated that you gave your shirt off your back when it came to doing concrete on our home or using a skid steer. A finesse ninja and talent with your concrete finishing. Truly a hard worker and loved when you showed up to a concrete placing party.
Your love for dogs, especially for Diesel, Steak, and Mable, was admirable. Playing fetch with rocks always made us laugh.
Getting a “perfect” photo of the energizer bunny never happened but your photos were perfect as is. Goofy faces, air kicks, and action shots were very typical.
With you in our lives for the past 16 years and as Drevan’s Dad and our kids’ FUNcle. We choose to remember the good times. Drevan will know the good qualities you had and offered all of us. There will always be that crazy story that starts with “remember that time that Lucas did …” Drevan will know who you were in your prime as a hard worker, you loved your family, you loved life, loved animals, loved beer, and loved a good adventure. Drevan will know your love of skateboarding, snowboarding, travel, and trail running.
Your golden years of classic Lucas will be missed and not forgotten. May you find peace in your next journey. Send it, Lucas. Go big or go home.

Dear Aunt Carolyn and Uncle CT,

I was so very sad to hear that Nate had passed. My heart aches for you and your family over the loss of your precious son. I cannot begin to comprehend how difficult this time must be for you. Please know that I am thinking of you and praying that you will eventually find peace and comfort.

Nate will live forever in my memory as a young, handsome kid who, together with his brother, use to annoy me to no end as a teenage girl. I wish I had a chance to know him better later in life.

May you find comfort in all the special memories you have of him.

With deepest condolences,

Amy

I did not know Nathan personally. But I am sure that having such fine examples and leaders in his life, like Carolyn and CT, he was surely a son to be proud of.
I hope his family and friends can eventually have not sadness that he is gone...but happiness that he was here.

Dear Carolyn and CT and family,

We loved Nate! He was always so enthusiastic and full of energy. He was very friendly with us and helped us whenever needed. One evening last summer my grandson was having a hard time with his skateboard. Nate immediately knew there was something wrong with the skateboard and volunteered to fix it. He then worked with our grandson on his technique. We were very impressed with his kindness and the time he took to help. Nate always made us smile with his stories. He was quite the athlete and was an excellent basketball player. He truly lived life to the fullest and we will miss seeing him.

You have our deepest condolences and love. You have been wonderful neighbors for the past 27 years. We are here for you.

So sad to hear this news. Although Nate worked for us at Jones Concrete for a pretty short amount of time, he definitely left a mark with his great personality and hard work ethic. We kept in touch a little through the years, talking about fly fishing being a mutual passion, as well as concrete projects we had done and his kind comments meant the world. He will be missed. So sorry for your loss. ❤️
