Dean Johnson Smith

1946 ~ 2015

Dean Johnson Smith passed away on July 11, 2015, at age 69, surrounded by family. He was born March 20, 1946 in Basin, Wyoming, to Jesse B. Smith and Myrna Johnson Smith. His early years were spent in Greybull, WY, as well as in Denver, CO and Billings, MT. While attending BYU, he met Nancy Kelsey. The two fell in love and were married on November 21, 1970. Dean obtained a business and finance degree and served for several years as an officer in the Marine Corps. From Dean and Nancy's union came a family, with daughter Brittany and sons Matthew and Peter. They were sealed for eternity in the Jordan River Temple on January 30, 1988.

Dean has always been a tireless worker, both in his career and at home. He rose from staff accountant to president of a large manufacturing company, and held other senior management positions with global businesses before opting for self-employment.

Dean was a family man, whose love, devotion and selflessness will never be forgotten. By word and example, he taught his family to live after the manner of happiness. He also genuinely cared for friends and neighbors, and particularly those facing challenges. Dean's life reflected his strong and ever-growing faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings, including Bishop of the Granite Ward.

Dean, with wife Nancy, spent his time with his children and grandchildren, and visiting and strengthening many others. He loved well and was well-loved. He was our faithful husband, father, papa and friend, and will be greatly missed. All who knew him are grateful for his influence in their lives. We love you Dean!

Dean is survived by his wife Nancy, his children Brittany Nielsen (Kirk), Matthew Smith (Adrienne) and Peter Smith (Tiffany), his twelve grandchildren, and his mother Myrna Smith. He was preceded in death by his father Jesse Smith.
