Bob, age 90, passed away on February 19, 2015. He was born in Salt Lake City on March 30, 1924 to Francis Mallet Bird and Edith Mae Strong. He married Mable Parker in the Salt Lake Temple on April 25, 1946; they had three children. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions including Bishop of the Liberty Park Ward. He and Mable served a mission in New Zealand. Bob Joined the Navy during WWII when he was 17 years old. He was discharged after the war, married Mable and pursued several occupations, but missed being on a ship. He decided to make the Navy his career and retired at the rank of Sr. Master Chief. We benefited by accompanying him to many wonderful places and adventures.
He is survived by sons, Jim (Carolyn) and Ralph (Beth); daughter, Billie; 10 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, parents and sister. He has left a lot of "damn kids" who love him. We express great appreciation to the staff of the Salt Lake Veterans Home who cared for Dad with great love, tenderness and respect.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive. Friends and family may visit Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple.
