Alva James Potter

1929 ~ 2019

On Tuesday, June4, 2019, Alva James (Barney) Potter, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away at age 89 after a long battle with cancer.

Barney was born on August 3,1929, in Walteria, California to William Alva Potter and Lilly May Pratt.He was one of three children.

On December 26, 1948, he married Betty May Fisher in Elko, Nevada.He pursued her before joining the Navywherehe was stationed at Whidbey Island and Adak, Alaska. She became the love of his life for over 70 years.They raised two children, a son Bruce and daughter Deborah.

He was employed at Kennecott Copper Mine as a Boiler Maker for 33 years before he retired.

Barney had a passion for hunting, fishing, boating, camping and being outdoors. He was excellent at all of them.

He was also an excellent carpenter and loved working with his hands.He built numerous homes including the families first home in Sandy, a cabin in Kamas with his dad and brother, and a home in Park City after his retirement. He was known for his ability to fix anything, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.

Barney was preceded in death by his father, Alva, his mother, Lilly and his brother Dan and sister-in-law Mary Potter.

He is survived by his wife Betty May Potter, his two children, Bruce Potter and Deborah Potter Dignam and son-in-law Edward Dignam. Two grandsons and their spouses,Bruce (Laura) Dignam, Chad (Emily) Potter, four great grandsons, Finn and Milo Potter, Wylie and Bodhi Dignam andsister Jolene (Burke) Worthington.

He was always there for his family and friends.We will remember his love and appreciate him always.He will be deeply missed.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 beginning at 1:00PM at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 S.) in Sandy. A visitation will be held prior at the mortuary beginning at 11AM.
