Blanche B. Johnston

1934 ~ 2016

South Jordan, Utah - Blanche B. Johnston, 81, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 12. Blanche was born May 18, 1934 in Blackfoot, Idaho, the daughter of Peter Rich and Blanche Isabel Johnston.

Blanche was a Law Librarian, retiring in 1997 after 19 years as Director of Library at Weil Gotshal and Manges' New York City office, one of the largest libraries in the US. A leader in her field, notable accomplishments include computerizing the library's catalog of books, and converting the library's system to emulate the Library of Congress' system for easy navigation.

Beloved by all who knew her, Blanche was a sophisticated woman, who enjoyed everything cultural: classical music, (usually playing all day in her home), reading books (especially plays and poetry), travel, art, the ballet, and good food. Blanche was naturally elegant and regal. She had an indomitable spirit. Struggling with medical issues for nearly 20 years, she faced her challenges fearlessly, always keeping a positive attitude.

Blanche is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by her daughters Alisanne G. Korologos (Tony), and Jacqueline R. Valentin (Gabriel), grandsons Dante (11), Giorgio (5), and Seve (3); her sisters Joan Balderree, Janet Robb, Charlotte Johnston, and Nina Johnston. Preceded in death by her husband Gabriel E. Torre, and her brothers Peter and Oliver Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy. Visitations will be Monday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. prior to services at the mortuary.
