Hettie Maurine Barnes Brooks

1930 ~ 2014

Salt Lake City, Utah-Hettie Maurine Barnes Brooks, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother died peacefully in her home June 14, 2014 surrounded by her loving husband and family due to a valiant fight against Cancer and Alzheimer's.

Maurine was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 6, 1930 to Ralph A. and Hettie Dredge Barnes. She married Harold A. Brooks on June 29, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple and was blessed with five children (Kathy Holyoak, Kerry Martin, Shauna Haymore, David Brooks and Julie Barnett). Together they served two full-time missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ‚ Fiji, Suva Mission from Sept. 1990 thru March 1992 and Australia, Sydney West Mission from August, 1994 thru February, 1996. They also served an inner city mission in Rose Park, Utah and a service mission in the Juvenile Detention Center for three years together. Maurine continually supported Harold in all of his Church assignments. She served many years in Relief Society and Young Women's. Maurine was the glue that held her family together. She accompanied her family on several trips, cruises and camping trips. She loved watching sports, including basketball and tennis. She enjoyed snow skiing, swimming and playing tennis. She loved the outdoor activities and was adventurous and loved to take her daughters and grand-daughters on girls' trips. She was a partner with her husband in a small candy business from 1980 thru 1990. She was service oriented in all that she did for all those around her. Maurine loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her most cherished possession.

Maurine is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph A. and Hettie Dredge Barnes and two brothers, Raymond Barnes and N. Alan Barnes. She is survived by her husband, her five children, twenty grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and her brother, Douglas D. Barnes.

A viewing will be held Friday, June 20, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm, Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call on Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 10:00-10:45 am and funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Valley View 11th Ward, 4101 South 1925 East (Gunderson Lane), Holladay, Utah. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn, 3401 So. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the missionary fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
