Randy Carlyle Shurtz passed away peacefully at home at the age of 59, the morning of January 25th, 2024, surrounded by his wife and children, after many years of suffering from multiple health conditions.

Randy was born on August 30th, 1964, to Carlyle and Barbara Shurtz in Murray, Utah. He graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1982. During his teenage years, he enjoyed working at Camp Steiner for Boy Scouts, becoming an Eagle Scout, working at the Burger Shop, playing football, and beginning his career at Zions Bank.

After graduation Randy served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Panama and Costa Rica where he loved serving the people. Randy had a deep love for Panama and Costa Rica and wanted to visit again, but never had the chance.

Randy met his eternal companion Dawna at Zions Bank in February of 1986. Later that year they were married in the Logan Temple on November 14th. Not long after, they followed Randy’s job to Arizona where they lived in Mesa for three years before moving back to Utah in June of 1990.

They were blessed with two children, Tyler and Sarah, whom he loves dearly and will always be a shining example for. He shared his love of the outdoors, camping, fishing, and hiking. He also shared his love of Escalante, the Boulder Mountains, and surrounding lakes with them and everyone he knew.

Randy spent his career working for Zions Bank in various roles including the collections department, consumer lending departments, and ended his 41-year career as a credit policy administrator. He made many lifelong friends through the many years that he worked for the company.

Randy was an avid fisherman, hunter, scoutmaster, Braves fan, and a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He was loved by all those who came in contact with him and blessed the lives of countless individuals. There are very few people who are as patient, kind, calm, dedicated, hardworking, and loving as Randy.

Randy is preceded in death by his parents, and grandparents. He is survived by his wife Dawna, his two children, Tyler (Shelby) and Sarah (Zak), along with his first grandchild of Tyler and Shelby, Nora. He is also survived by his sisters Cindy Wood (Ken) and Kaylene Henderson (Wallace) and his brother Michael. A viewing will be held at Larkin Mortuary at 3688 W 12600 S, Riverton, UT, on Tuesday, January 30th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. There will be a graveside service at the Hyrum City Cemetery Wednesday the 31st, at 1:00pm.

A special thank you to the staff of Fresenius Kidney Care Clinic in Riverton for their dedication and compassion during his treatment of dialysis the last year of his life and A Plus Hospice Care for providing him comfort in his final days.

Guestbook/Condolences

Sending love and condolences to Randy’s family. Our family spent our early childhood with the Shurtz family. They took us camping with them when we were very young. We played at their house a lot. They gave us rides in their station wagon. Randy and I were the same age. We were in the same primary and Sunday school classes. Randy was a nice, gentle friend. We appreciate him- and his family touching our lives for good!

Randy is a great brother-in-law. He was always kind. I enjoyed watching him with Remi, Sarah’s dog. They were the best of friends. Randy would grill us delicious steaks and chicken in the summer. He will be missed. Love you, Randy.
