Raymond “Ray” Tyler Brenneman Jr. was born on May 27, 1940 in Los Angeles California. Early in his life, his parents moved he and his sister, Jeanne, to Riverton, Utah. Ray attended Jordan High School where he lettered in football and wrestling. He attended the University of Utah for a short time where he became a lifetime Ute fan. Ray developed a love for music in high school. He was a member of his high school marching band and later he became a member of the U of U Marching Band.

Ray’s love for music launched his career in the music field. He started his career with Summerhays Music where he was a manager and learned his craft as a musical instrument repairman. In 1969, Ray and Maurine opened Hyland Music. Ray served the Salt Lake Valley for the next 47 years. Ray was a master musical instrument repairman but his true calling was salesman. He could talk to anyone at anytime about almost anything. More importantly, he was truly interested in his customers and their needs. Ray used all of his talents to create a successful business that stood the test of time.

Ray was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He held many callings within the church including, High Priest, Councilor in the Bishopric, Elder’s Quorum Counselor, Young Men’s President and Boy Scout Leader. He was also a temple worker at the Jordan River Temple.

Ray loved working with the youth of his community. He spent over 20 years as a youth baseball, football, basketball and rugby coach. He served for a time as the president of the Hillcrest Western Boys Baseball Association. This later lead to a position as a regional representative with the Western Boys Baseball Association.

Ray had many passions in life besides his family, Hyland Music, his church and the youth of his community. He enjoyed watching his Utes and the LA Rams. He loved genealogy, painting, photography and hunting. He especially loved fishing at Strawberry with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Maurine, sons, Paul (Natalie), Kent (Kristen), Michael (Teressa), Russell (Tammy) and John, 18 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren plus 2 on the way. Preceded in death by his parents Ray and Mildred Brenneman, sister Jeanne Marie Hughes and great granddaughter Taizlee Taylor.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road, (10600 South), Sandy, UT. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00pm and again on Tuesday from 1:00 to 1:45pm prior to the services at the mortuary.

Hi "Neighbor", is how we greet each other, as we literally live across from each other. Ray was our ministering brother. A gentle soul, kind, giving. He will be missed. Sending love and sympathy to Maureen and family.

- Arnel & Rorie Macahilas

Maureen and family, we were so saddened to hear from David about Ray’s passing. And to add to our sadness, we have to tell you that we are in San Diego starting another mission and won’t be able to attend the viewing or the services. We think you know Ray was very special to us, and especially to Don for his unselfish work as Young Men’s President when Don was Bishop. He could be counted on for anything he was asked, and he gave even more, coming up with all kinds of marvelous activities that made the Young Men’s program special. We love you all and know how much you will miss Ray, and we will miss him too. All our love, Don and Vickie

I’m sorry to hear of the Passing of Ray and send my condolences to all the family. I knew Ray as my Baseball coach. He was a wonderful Man, and a great coach. So grateful for all the great childhood memories playing for Ray and learning the game of baseball from him. I was a childhood friend of his son’s and enjoyed visiting their home. He and his wife were always so kind to me. They had a great family. And he seemed like a great family man.

- Michael D Carson

I stopped by Hyland Music every now and then since I knew someone who worked there. Whenever I got the chance to interact with Ray or see him interact with others, I always saw and was impressed by his kindness and willingness to help, along with with his great sense of humor.
