  • Renate Anne Moritz Heyn

Our loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter, and many different endearments for Grandmother, passed away February 14, 2022, from the cruel ravages of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Renate was born in Hanover, Germany, on May 4, 1944, to Willi and Elfriede Moritz. Renate spoke lovingly about her years spent as a child in Germany. She immigrated to America in 1952 with her parents and younger sister, Irene.

While in high school at East High, Renate met, and in 1964, married, Jeff Heyn, who admittedly married way out of his league. The marriage lasted for 57 years and produced three wonderful sons: Michael, Robert and Christopher, along with five precious grandchildren: Paige, Rachel, Mitchell, Emma and Serena.

To say her grandchildren were the light of her life is the ultimate understatement. Renate’s finest moments always centered around her family.
Renate had many skills and talents, especially related to music and decorating. She sang in several choirs including the Jay Welch Chorale, and participated in yearly performances of the Messiah with the Oratorio Society of Utah. She kept a beautiful home where her family always felt welcomed and loved.

Renate loved traveling with her husband to their favorite spots including Carmel, California and Sun Valley, Idaho. Jeff and Renate were fortunate to return to Hanover in 1998, where, after 46 years, Renate was able to find her childhood home.
Renate was a natural caregiver for her parents and son, Christopher. Renate spent many hours with Jeff enjoying a good cup of coffee. She was a beautiful woman with a radiant smile. Alzheimer’s took away so much from Renate, but could not take away her dignity nor her humanity. Her tenacious spirit may have been dimmed but not extinguished.

Our family would like to thank the caregivers from Good Shepherd and Annie’s Elder Care for their loving and expert attention. Special thanks to Sonnie and Mary who grew to love Renate and who were loved by her family in return.

Renate is survived by her husband Jeff, sons Michael (Shana), Robert (Paula), grandchildren Paige Pectol (Ian), Rachel Sharp (Evan), Mitchell (Jordyn), Emma Fox (Adam) and Serena (Kody), and sister-in-law Lynda Logsdon. She is preceded in death by her son Christopher, sister Irene Hamilton, brother-in-law Howard Logsdon, and parents Willi and Elfriede Moritz.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 25, 2022, at Larkin Mortuary, located at 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. followed by graveside services at the Salt Lake City Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that visitors wear masks.
