Richard "Rick" Gardner Hughes, born January 24,1945 to Joseph Walden and Lucille Johnson Hughes In Washington D.C. succumbed to a rare form of cancer on February 19,2023 after a courageous six year battle.

Rick graduated in Political Science from Brigham Young University where he met and married Gwendolyn (Gwennie) Riedel. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple May 29,1969. They are the loving parents of Lisa Christine (Rick) Evenson and Richard Travis (Ana Emilce) Hughes. After 40 years of marriage Gwenie passed away on December 30, 2007.

He met Bonnie Jean Newbold and they were married on December 16, 2008. Richard expressed his love and gratitude for Bonnie's love, untiring service and efforts during his fight with cancer on many occasions to friends and family.

Rick worked for 26 years as owner of Towne and Country Mortgage and was so proud of the work he did, and the lifelong friendships that came out of it. He would often drive past a house later, pointing and saying "I helped them finance that house!"

Rick loved Utah and the West in general. He was often found riding his motorcycles through canyons or up to Canada with his motorcycle gang. He truly loved being out in the open air, especially in a freshly polished sports car. Rick was a talented artist and often drew pictures of his beloved cars that he owned through the years. His other interests included home remodeling projects for family, finishing his basement and making them fun for his family, all things sugar, especially ice cream, petting almost every cat he sees, playing card games with family, and serving for a short time, as an ordinance worker at the Draper temple, before the cancer stopped him from serving.

Rick is preceded in death by his wife, Gwen, his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Craig and Christine Hughes, and his brother, Kent Hughes.

Rick is survived by his wife, Bonnie, children Lisa (Rick) Evenson, Travis (Ana Emi ) Hughes, brother, Keith (Sally) Hughes, sister, Maryann (Lee) Onstott, seven grandchildren - Ali (Dane) Lewis, Tyler Evenson, Brooke (Tanner) Lund, Chase Evenson (Ethan Simons), Ethan Hughes, Madison Hughes and Paige Hughes and six great grandchildren - Monty Lewis, Rosie Lewis, Griffey Lund, Andi Lewis, Ozzie Lund and Maren Lewis.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Suncrest Hospice for their service and guidance to Bonnie and Rick and the CNA staff and friends at Spring Gardens Senior Living Center in Draper for their service and kindness.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the Hillcrest Stake Center located at 8485 S 1000 E in Sandy, Utah. A viewing will be held the night prior, Tuesday, February 28, 2023 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Hillcrest Stake Center, 8485 S 1000 E in Sandy. A short viewing from 10:00-10:45 am will be held prior to the funeral services.

Good friends are hard to find and Rick was always my best friend.we kind pf grew up together. Raised our families together. Many great times. Shared our vice of motorcycle riding. He was the brother that I never had. He was good people. Ill see you in a year or two. Lpve, dick

rick was our ward teacher for a couple of years. we really liked visiting with him. he always stopped and visited when going on his walk. he was always talking about bonnie and especially about her ivy, our deepest sympathy
