Ruth Ursula Dietz

1921 ~ 2022

Ruth Ursula Dietz
1921-2022

Our beloved Mom and Oma passed away March 1, 2022, in South Jordan, Utah

She was born July 18,1921 in Koenigsberg, (East Prussia) Germany. (Now Kaliningrad, Russia). Born to Max Gustav Freimann and Margarete Hedwig Krause. She married Franz Helmut Holdau June 12, 1943. He died in World Ward II on August 3, 1943. During World War II she lost her father, older brother, and husband. She married Heinrich Werner Dietz March 9, 1946. During the war she was forced by the Russians to flee from Koenigsberg to Flensburg, Germany.

In 1956, as a recently divorced mother with 2 children, Peter, and Birgit she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, which took a lot of courage since she did not speak English or have any means of support for her family. Her sisters, Ingrid and Irmgard had come to Utah in prior years and encouraged her to come as well.

Family was the most important thing to her. She loved them and enjoyed spending time with them. She also had many friends and enjoyed having them visit.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and had a faithful testimony of Jesus Christ. She loved music, singing, cooking, knitting, and sewing. She made several cute outfits for her granddaughters.

Ruth is survived by her two children, Peter, and Birgit, two sisters and a brother. She also has 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a sister, son in law, Juergen and granddaughter, Amanda.

Friends and family are welcome to attend services in her honor on March 7, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, located at 1950 East Dimple Dell Road, Sandy, Utah. The viewing will be held 1 hour prior to the services, beginning at 1:00 p.m. To view previously held services please visit

What a delightful human being! I went back to church just so I could see her. Ruth was Real: honest, courageous, sincere, audacious, funny; a true classic. She was so very easy to Love. The proof is in her children.

I only knew Ruth for about 9 months when she moved in two doors down from me. I loved her before I even met her! She became my dear friend and I loved the time we spent together playing Rummikub, (which she beat me at most of the time) and visiting about her life and family. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren. Family was everything to her.
I will miss her terribly, but I know she is so happy now. I love you Ruth

I grew up going to the German Speaking Ward. She always had a ready smile and Kind ward. What a great Family! She will be missed.

Love you Tante Ruth. I will miss visiting with you, we had some good talks through the years. You taught us how to dance, play games and go for walks. I am sure that you are in Heaven playing Mensch Aergert dich nicht. Enjoy being with your parents, brother and sister again. And the husband you are sealed to and only had a month with him before he passed away. Love you, Elke

Pieter and Brigit, we are so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was such a wonderful friend to Anna, I think Anna must have come for her, so they could play their games in heaven together. Prayers for your comfort at this time.
