Dayle R. Flandro

1928 ~ 2013

Dayle Rawlings Flandro passed away on December 13, 2013 of acute leukemia at home at the age of 85. He was born to Arthur L. and Claire Pendleton Flandro on June 26, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah; the fourth of six children. He graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah. He was a veteran of WWII, serving at the beginning of the Occupation of Japan. He served as an Honor Guard for Major General William C. Chase, commanding officer of the First Cavalry Division.

Dayle met Mary Steadman at the U. of U., and they were married on May 25, 1949. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

Dayle was always a hard worker. He retired as a foreman at Kennecott Copper Corp. Refinery after 33 years. He then worked as a buildings and grounds foreman for the LDS Church for 10 years. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Cyprus Credit Union for 37 years and enjoyed traveling all over the country with Mary on its behalf.

An active member of the LDS Church, Dayle served a mission with his wife at the Veterans Hospital where he was in the Branch Presidency. They also served a leadership mission at the Liberty Eighth Ward in Liberty Stake, where Dayle was the Bishop. Other Church callings that he held were Seventies Group Leader, High Priest Group Leaderships, Ward Mission Leader, and Bishop's Counselor.

Dayle was an avid sportsman. As a member of the State Championship Track Team, he was once the fourth fastest high school runner in Utah. He loved football; having played in high school and in the army. Dayle loved people and was so friendly and gracious to everyone he met. He especially loved to spend time with his family camping and fishing and also working and relaxing at their cabin in the Uintah Mountains.

Dayle is survived by his wife, Mary, and children: Rhonda (Jon) Bowerbank, Cynthia (Grant) Aagard, and Roger (Bonnie) Flandro; 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren who will all miss his big bear hugs and hearing wonderful stories about his life that he recalled with great detail and enthusiasm from his incredible memory. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul (Marian), Dr. Royce (Martha), Scott (Miriam), and Mark (Donette) Flandro, and brother-in-law, Dr. Lloyd Call. His sister, Beverly Call, preceded him in death. The Flandro family organization, ALFFA, and all of its activities were especially important to Dayle, and he was very close to his brothers and sister.

For their kind and loving care during the past three years, Dayle's family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Slomowitz and Dr. Jager and to all of the staff and nurses at the AMU at the VA Hospital and also to the nurses and staff at Access Home Health and Hospice.
