Barbara Jean Alvey

1930 ~ 2013

Barbara Jean (Bobbie) Alvey, 83, beloved sister, aunt, friend and teacher, died Aug. 31, 2013, in Draper, Utah.

Bobbie was born June 10, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Sylvia F. Ford and Albert R. Alvey. She received a teaching degree from the University of Utah, where she played on the women's basketball and volleyball county recreation teams and earned a letter sweater through the Women's Recreation Association. She spent numerous summers working at Yellowstone National Park with her cousin Joyce and enjoyed a career as a teacher and coach at Olympus Junior High School in Holladay, Utah. She was an excellent teacher and received several awards for her work.

Bobbie was a member of the Salt Lake Oratorio Society. She found great joy in singing The Messiah and did so every year from the time she was 15 years old.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Salt Lake Temple for five years.

Bobbie loved animals and raised and cared for dogs, a desert tortoise and several birds.

She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Eugene Ford; nephew, John C. Alvey; and her dogs. She is survived by her brothers Raymond F. (Marjorie) Alvey of Salt Lake City, Utah and James (Sheri) Alvey and William (Shelley) Alvey of Ogden Utah; sister Mary Lee Alvey (Todd) Smith of Hooper, Utah, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Highland Care Center, and the staff of the Wentworth at Draper's Stratford Memory Unit, including special nurses Loretta, Alissa, and Kathleen.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary on 260 E. South Temple. Friends can call on the family prior to the service from 12 to 12:45 a.m. Interment at Centerville City Cemetery.
