Scott Cunningham Mitchell, beloved brother, husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away at the age of 75. Scott was born to Douglas William Mitchell and Ida Beth Cunningham Mitchell, the 2nd of 4 children, Glen, Kimberly, and Corey. Throughout his life, he embodied a spirit of adventure, creativity, and unwavering devotion to his family.
He described his youth in Salt Lake City, Utah as ‘an idyllic 50’s childhood.’ He grew up near Liberty Park, wandering alleyways with friends looking for pop bottles to turn into cash. His father built him a child sized Model T car that they later drove in the Pioneer Day parade. Scott gained so many of the attributes he would demonstrate in his life from his father.
Scott graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Geology from the University of Utah, setting the stage for a career that would take him to Denver, Colorado. It was there that he met the love of his life, Cynthia Joan Verdeal, affectionately known as Cyndi. Scott often told his kids that he found their mom under a rock, which they loved and she hated (and still does). They married on February 28, 1975, marking the beginning of a partnership filled with love. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on December 16, 1977.
After moving back to Utah, he switched careers to join his fathers company, working as a Master Electrician alongside his brothers. His wide circle of family and friends are grateful for this switch (pun intended), and the countless hours he has spent repairing their air conditioners and electrical fixtures.
Always a fan of going for a drive, this took several forms through his life. He and Cyndi often embarked on scenic drives in Scott’s pride and joy, a 1974 Stingray Coup with the top down. As a young father, he would take his kids (one at a time) on morning drives through the mountains on his motorcycle. And no Sunday was complete without a family drive while listening to the Beach Boys.
Scott took advantage of every opportunity to go camping with his family and friends. A majority of these trips were to the Sand Dunes where Scott was the de facto leader of all rides. When Scott was in the lead, regardless of the scenario, you followed with confidence and joy. He forged strong, lifelong friendships and always showed up for his friends and family.
Scott was known as the "fix-it man" with an innate ability to repair anything. He thrived in solving the most complex of problems. Physical work for the benefit of others brought him so much joy and was one of the ways that he showed love and appreciation for those around him. He spent countless hours building unique Christmas gifts for his grandchildren. If you needed a repair or had an idea of what you wanted to build, you talked to him first. His handiness extended to building and flying large scale RC air planes which he loved to do alongside his two brothers and their Father.
One of his defining characteristics is his love of music. The Mitchell family would fall asleep every Christmas Eve to the sound of their Dad playing Christmas carols on the organ. He loved to play the electric guitar and spent decades with his dear friend in the basement singing at the top of their lungs to “mostly accurate” lyrics then laughing out loud as they argued about who’s lyrics were correct.
Scott Cunningham Mitchell will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his loving wife, Cynthia Joan Mitchell, his 4 children, Corey Scott (Tina), Michelle (Caleb), Jared (Harmony), and Tiffany (Shawn), and his 11 grandchildren. Along with them, he leaves a wide circle of friends whose lives he enriched with his kindness, humor, and his service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister.
A celebration of Scott's life will be held at 11 am, July 31, 2024 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ward house located at 3676 West 4700 South, Taylorsville Utah 84129. A visitation will be held at the same location an hour prior to the celebration of life.
He will be laid to rest at Larkin Sunset Gardens located at 1950 East Dimple Dell Road, Sandy Utah, 84092.
Rest in peace, Scott. Your love will continue to fill our hearts, and we are blessed with countless wonderful memories of you.
