Steven Mark Doman

1963 ~ 2023

Steven Mark Doman passed away on December 18th, 2023 he died of complications due to an unexpected infection.

Steve was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Marge and Jerry Doman. He was the oldest of four children: Steve, Kim, Rob, and Kathy. Though born in Utah, he mostly grew up in Canada and California. He attended BYU on a full-ride swimming scholarship, then went on to graduate school at the University of Utah. He got married and had three children: Brittany, Brock, and Abby. He later divorced. At the time of his death, Steve was in the process of retirement from the Davis County School District, where he lived out his dream career of coaching and teaching for 20+ years.

It was in elementary school, while living in Canada, that Steve’s deep love of sports began—a love affair that lasted a lifetime. And his love was not specific to any one sport, but rather to all of them. He played and competed in: hockey, wrestling, skiing, gymnastics, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, and swimming. And Steve didn’t just participate in these sports—he excelled at them. While the awards and medals he earned throughout his life are too numerous to list, a few are fun to mention: in elementary school, he was the 11-and-under Canadian national champion for football passing, punting, and kicking. In high school, he wasn’t just the quarterback of the football team—he was also the kicker and the punter. In college, he was a WAC swimming champion many times over, earning gold medals in numerous events.

Steve turned his success as a competitive athlete into a lifelong career in coaching and teaching. As a teacher, he taught a variety of courses to high school students. As a swimming coach, he taught swimmers at every stage—from beginner to the highest collegiate level. But Steve was so much more than just a teacher or coach to his students—he was also a motivator, a mentor, and a friend—helping students in all aspects of their lives. His genuine, compassionate nature left an enduring impression on everyone who crossed his path.

Steve was known for his optimism, positivity, laughter, and his contagious smile. His passions were sports, coaching, family, plays, comedy, and horses. And let’s not forget his eternal loyalty and obsession with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Steve is survived by his mother, Marge Doman; siblings Kim (Forrest) Tripp, Rob Doman, Kathy Doman; children Brock, Brittany, Abby and their spouses; nephews Chad and Brandon Tripp, Kaden and Sage Doman; and nieces Amber and Shea Tripp. He was preceded in death by his beloved father and ultimate hero, Jerry Doman.

Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 28th at 11 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints building located at 11626 South 300 East, Draper UT 84020. A viewing for friends and family will take place prior to the service from 9:30 – 10:45 am.

So sorry to hear this news. Steve was the best of friends. In high school he was a leader in every sport and environment he was in. He was a member of The Beyer Five that brought levity and spirit to the basketball games and school events. Love him and know he will continue to be active in each of your lives. He’s just built that way!!!

Steve,

It was the fastest 4 years of my life to date, but I remember exactly when we became friends. Summer of 2020 I was wearing my Dodgers jersey and you being a Giants fan just couldn't resist. We sparked up conversation and instantly we were pals. Fast forward to the summer of 23 and you and I would sit and talk, laugh and sometimes even cry together. The unexpected twists and turns life takes makes it worth the ride and what an awesome ride its been. We love you Steve! As Eva would say "After a while Alligator"
Raider Nation will miss you on Christmas day but I will miss you so much more. "Love you Buddy"

To the Doman family:
I am so sorry to hear of Steve’s passing! I want you to know what I remember of Steve. Although Steve was one of the most well-known “popular“ kids in our class at Beyer high school, he was always kind and friendly to everyone. He was never arrogant or “too good“ for anyone. I never heard Steve say a negative word about friends, family, teachers. He smiled and had a sparkle in his eyes for everyone. Steve was thoughtful and nurturing and protective of the ones he loved. I cherish my memories with him, and I am so very grateful that we had those times together
. I know his legacy will live on. He has obviously inspired, encouraged, and motivated, countless swimmers, friends, and family members. I count myself blessed to have been counted among them.
Steve, you were one of a kind. I hope you are basking in the sunlight and the water of your heaven eternally!

To the Doman Family-my memories of Steve brings a smile. I’ve enjoyed through the years to reminisce how the Openshaws and Domans families were friends. I remember spending so much time at your house in Sherwood Forest and swimming in your pool (of course!) Steve was always so kind and was respected amongst his peers. My condolences to your family. Much love and hugs. May God Be with You til We Meet Again.
