Max Edward Cooley

1931 ~ 2018

Max Edward Cooley, Moab native and long-time resident died peacefully surrounded by his family at his home in Salt Lake City on December 1, 2018 at the age of 87.

He married Helen Rose in 1954 after his discharge from the US Navy, where he served in the Korean Conflict as a torpedo man on the USS Arnold J. Isbell.Max and Helen settled in Moab, where they raised five children and he shared his lifetime love for the outdoors with his family. He was a man of integrity and compassion, a devoted husband, a fierce protector of his family, and a loyal friend.Max worked most of his life in the mining industry and retired from Barrick Merker Gold Mine in 1996.He often said his 14 Grandchildren and 19 Great-grandchildren were his richest blessings.

Max is survived by Helen, his wife of 64 years, his sister Lois Bittle, his daughters Catherine (Roger Bullock) and Janice (Kevin Dickson), his sons Charles (Marilyn) and James (Karen), and his many grand and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Robert and brother Bill.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at Sunset Memorial Garden in Moab. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation to their favorite charity.
