Lucy Grant Cannon Dutson Taylor passed away peacefully on Friday, October 27, 2017 in her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was ninety-five years old.
Lucy was born April 19, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to George Jenkins and Lucy Grant Cannon. She spent her childhood surrounded by her six siblings and many cousins in the Avenues neighborhood which the family nicknamed "Grantsville." Her family spent summers in Brighton and Emigration Canyons exploring streams, playing games, and hiking. She attended West High School and graduated in Education and Home Economics from Brigham Young University. She also attended the University of Utah, receiving a teaching certificate and some graduate education.
Lucy married Keith Clinton Dutson in May 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Santa Monica, California and had two children, Elizabeth and Keith. Following her husband's death in a plane crash in 1955, she returned to Salt Lake City to be closer to family. For many years, she worked as a secretary at the University of Utah. She was a faithful lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as a member of the Primary General Board for 14 years under the leadership of Sister LaVern Parmley. Lucy helped write manuals and worked on the committee that conceived the "Choose the Right" motto and designed the CTR logo. Other callings included ward and stake Relief Society President, primary teacher, and family record extraction program specialist. She married Frank William Taylor in June 1967. Frank had two children, Carolyn and William (Bill) whom she welcomed with love into the family. Lucy and Frank served as missionaries in the Chile Santiago North Mission, volunteered as guides on Temple Square and traveled throughout the world.
Lucy enjoyed music, church service, and spending time with loved ones. Her thoughtful nature and warm hospitality touched the lives of many neighbors and relatives. She was a devoted wife and mother, a caring grandmother, and a loyal friend. Her example of unwavering faith and humility is treasured by those who knew her. She once wrote "I love my Savior Jesus Christ and pray that I may be worthy to live in His presence."
The family would like to thank all of those who have taken care of Lucy during the last several months. Their care allowed her to keep her independence as much as possible and to stay in her home. Lucy is survived by her son Keith C. Dutson (Phyllis), E. Gordon Gee, Jane P. Taylor, Lawrence Harmon, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Keith Clinton Dutson, Frank W. Taylor, her parents, siblings, Elizabeth Dutson Gee, Carolyn Taylor Harmon and William F. Taylor.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street. Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, on Friday, 6-8 p.m. at the church on Saturday morning 9:30-10:30 a.m. Burial will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
