Wendell Lynn Cottrell

1941 ~ 2017

Lynn Cottrell passed away on March 23, 2017, due to complications related to brain cancer. Lynn was born on June 20, 1941 to Wendell Layton Cottrell and Wynona Kirkham Cottrell in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the youngest of 3 children.

Lynn was a member of the first graduating class of Highland High School in Salt Lake City. He went on to receive a BS in Economics from the University of Utah where he joined the fraternity Beta Theta Pi. The associations formed through this membership remained of great importance to him throughout his life. He served an LDS mission in the North British Mission from 1961-1963. After graduating from Harvard with an MBA, he proposed to Susan, his wife of nearly 50 years, with the words, \"Are we gonna do this or not?\" This was the closest he ever came to expressing romantic sentiment. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 11, 1967.

Lynn started his career in the marketing department of Browning Arms in Morgan, Utah. He later was employed by Intermountain Milk Producers Assoc. and the Western Dairymen Cooperative, last serving as the Vice President of Administration. He was also employed as the President of the Employer\s Council of Utah and later was Senior Vice President of Administration at the Newspaper Agency Corporation.

Lynn followed in his father\s footsteps by being involved in many civic organizations. He served as a Chairman of the Utah Manufacturers Association, the Utah State Water Quality Board, and the Utah-Idaho Teamsters Welfare Trust. He was a member of the Utah State Drinking Water Board. He was the Ogden City Civil Service Commissioner for most of the 1980\s and a member of the Rotary Club of Ogden. From 1977-1980, he was the Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Ogden Pioneer Days, and his annual breakneck rides into the stadium provided his wife and children with spasms of both laughter and horror. For the better part of the last decade, he provided \"security\" during the Utah State Legislature session.

Lynn enjoyed his many church callings throughout his life. He served as Bishop of the Ogden 41st Ward and was an Ordinance Worker in the Bountiful Temple. He and Susan served an LDS mission in the Nauvoo Temple from 2011-2012.

He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Joseph Cottrell. Lynn is survived by his spouse, Susan (McKean), sons Charles (Kelly) and Samuel, daughter Whitney Hill (David), sisters Colleen Williams (Roland) and Marilyn Taylor (Richard), 7 grandchildren and many dear in-laws, nieces and nephews. His family and friends will miss him dearly.

A viewing will take place on Sunday, March 26, 2017, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the North Canyon Stake Center, 965 Oakwood Drive, Bountiful, UT 84010. There will also be a viewing on Monday, March 27, from 10:00 - 11:00 am, followed by the funeral service at 11:30 am. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank the many friends who spent time with him over the past several months, as well as the good doctors and staff of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah Medical Center, and the HighlandCare Center.
