Obituary

Thomasine “Tommy” Louise Geis Mecham, age 89, passed away peacefully at home in South Jordan, Utah, on Friday, October 23, 2026.

Born April 26, 1937, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Alma Samuel Geis and Blanche Beatrice Ipson, Tommy grew up as the middle child of three, sharing her childhood with her older brother, Roy Geis, and younger brother, Greg “Butch” Geis. She attended West High School, graduating with the Class of 1955.

In August of 1956, while cruising State Street she ran into Marcellus Dee Mecham, the love of her life. They married a few months later on November 24, 1956, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti Temple on November 28, 1962. Together, they raised six kids and built a life centered around their family.

Tommy was the ultimate caretaker and the heart of her family. She was always whistling a tune around the house as she went about her day, making home feel warm and inviting. Her door was always unlocked, and her favorite thing was someone popping in unannounced. She was never short on quick humor or a laugh at her own jokes. She made sure there were plenty of snacks on the table for anyone who stopped by, and she loved having grandkid sleepovers. Tommy loved being around people, always looking forward to lunches and activities with her girlfriends and spending years serving in the temple with dear friends. She often shared stories of her time playing fast-pitch softball and her adventurous days with the SLC Motorcycle Club.

Her yard was her happy place. Tommy took pride in keeping up her garden, loved all kinds of fun yard decor, and insisted on mowing her own lawn well into her 80s. She loved having the family over to play games, watch sports on TV, the Hallmark Channel, or just hang out. She also went all-out for Christmas, decorating every inch of the house and keeping one special tree up all year long just because it brought her joy. And if you ever had the privilege of eating her legendary homemade pizza, you knew you were one of the lucky ones!

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Tommy loved serving in her callings over the years, especially as Young Women’s Camp Director. Later in life, she and Dee had the blessing of serving two missions together.

Tommy was preceded in death by her parents, Alma and Blanche; her husband, Dee; and her older brother, Roy.

She leaves behind a family who will miss her every day: her younger brother Butch, her six kids, Chris (Karen), Marci (Rex) Kelson, Tai (Kelli), Marla Moltz, Jason (Heather), and Joshua (Stefanie); 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren, with another sweet great-granddaughter expected to arrive in April 2027.

Viewings will be held Thursday, Oct. 29, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 30, 10:00-10:45 a.m. Funeral services will follow Friday at 11:00 a.m. All services will take place at the Glenmoor 5th Ward, 4881 W. Cindy Ln., South Jordan. Interment will be at Larkin Sunset Gardens.

My heart goes out to all of you. We are so sorry. We love, Tommy Lou. She is always so sweet and welcoming, full of life and very funny. She is definitely one of my favorite cousins. We had a cousin luncheon and she made us all laugh. She's so matter-of-fact and always had a good story to tell. I know she's entertaining them on the other side and so happy to see your dad.💞 May the Lord comfort and bless you during this very difficult time. Until you need again.❤️

I am going to miss Aunt Tommy so much. I never saw her angry, always smiling, laughing, whistling, and taking care of everyone. She always had a kind word and a big hug for me. I was very fortunate to have a big family and I can remember all the fun things we used to do when we would get together over at grandma and grandpa‘s house with all my cousins and aunts and uncles. Love you Auntie, till we meet again

My heart aches for those of us left in wait until we meet again, but oh! What a wonderful reunion there must be in Heaven! My most treasured memories were the Mecham family reunions! Visiting Aunt Tommy and Uncle Dee’s trailer was like visiting the Candy house in Hansel and Grettle. (Minus the witch) I remember my Dad saying not too much, and Aunt Tommy would hand me 2 more red licorice ropes behind his back! Aunt Tommy was always full of laughter and had such a wonderful sense of humor. She and Uncle Dee were quite the pair! I’m still terrified of the wolf in Dee’s trunk! I remember the day I called her to get Josh’s phone number to give to my best friends Sister… within seconds (nano) she gave me his work #, Cell #, and Pager #! 😂 She was like lightning! I sure love you Aunt Tommy. What a truly beautiful legacy you have left with us all, in our memories with you! God be with you until we meet again! ❤️
