Dorothea Wimmer Morton

1922 ~ 2016

Dorothea W. Morton "Grannie" passed away on July 4th, 2016. How fitting for her to leave her frail body behind on a day that celebrates freedom and independence! Dorothea was 93 years old, and had lived graciously with the effects of aging for many years. She was born on July 9, 1922 in a log cabin in Duchesne, UT--the last of 6 children born to John D. and Emma Wimmer.

Dorothea married Ray B. Allred in 1942, but was left a young widow when her husband died in a tragic accident in 1949, leaving her with 3 small children and another on the way. In 1954 she married Philip B. Morton. They shared their lives together until Phil died in 1999, leaving Dorothea a widow once again.

Dorothea was a woman who loved many things. She was an avid reader, loved the color turquoise, and loved shopping, shopping, and more shopping! Over the years she filled her home with her collections of rare and unique bowls and dishes, rooster decorations for her kitchen, and shoes to fill her closet. She loved spending time in St. George, UT and Island Park, ID where she enjoyed days spent fishing in the rivers with her family. Dorothea was humble about many things, but not about fishing. She loved the days when she "out-fished" everyone else, especially her husband.

Dorothea was an elegant woman who always had an eye for fashion and quality. She was always well put together no matter where she was, whether it was a picnic with the family, a day out shopping, or even sitting in a wheelchair in her final days. She always looked her best. Her hair was always done, and a smile was always on her face.

Dorothea was involved in many things and held many titles. She was the president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Duchesne, was the county recorder for Duchesne County, and was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. But her favorite title was that of mother and "Grannie." She was an exceptional mother to her 4 children: Patti (Dean) Hofheins, Marilyne (Lou) Barlow, Bob (Maureen) Allred, and Susie (John) Schultz. She was also the loving matriarch to 16 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of love to generations who will not soon forget their Grannie Morton.

Dorothea was a woman who had a great love for her country. She was a patriot at heart and loved celebrating the 4thof July and her birthday in the same week, and this year is no exception. On July 4th, she celebrated her freedom by returning to her heavenly home, and on her birthday, July 9th, we will celebrate her 94thbirthday by honoring her in a funeral service dedicated to celebrating her rich and abundant life. Services will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary at 2350 E. 1300 S. in Salt Lake City. Family and friends may pay their respects from12:00 to 1:45 PM, with funeral services following thereafter at2 P.M.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Coventry Assisted Living and Solstice Hospice for the exceptional service and love they provided to our Grannie while she was in their care.
