Peter F. Olsen

1935 ~ 2016

Peter F. Olsen, 81, having struggled with ill health, macular degeneration, and the imminent loss of independence, decided he was done. He died early Saturday morning, April 23, 2016 on his own terms.

Pete was born April 7, 1935 in Red Bank, New Jersey to Frank and Edna Olsen. He attended grade school and high school in New Jersey. His senior annual stated Pete was "A sensational dresser … A natural brain … Easy on the eyes … Is known for snubbing people when he is without his ‘specs.'" He received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Michigan majoring in Wildlife Ecology followed by his PhD in Zoology from Auburn University where his research dealt with diseases of animals transmissible to man.

He served two years in the US Army at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, and then returned to Dugway as a civilian to direct research investigations dealing with the ecology and epidemiology of various zoonotic diseases.

Most of his professional career was spent as an environmental consultant dealing with hazardous waste and ground water contamination, especially at petroleum refineries.

Married Donna M. Olsen in 1970; later divorced; no children.

Much of his leisure time in later years was spent training and competing with his Golden Retriever dogs at Hunt Tests and Field Trials and hunting for geese.

Pete is survived by loving friends who appreciated his loyalty, humor, wit, and blunt honesty. He requested no services, asking only that we live long, happy, and healthy lives. Online condolences welcomed at www.LarkinCares.com.
