Dr. James Karl Knell

1927 ~ 2018

James Karl Knell, a tender hearted man with a life built on family, integrity, service and compassion, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the age of 90. He was born August 18, 1927 in Cedar City, Utah to Joseph Karl and Mary Smith Knell.

He graduated from East High School where he was Student Body President, but gained his nickname of "Twinkle Toes" for his skills on the basketball court. He continued his education at the University of Utah where he also played basketball with some of the Utes all-time greats, then furthered his studies at the University of Washington earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, with specialization in Orthodontics. He opened his private practice in Foothill Village in 1956 where he perfected thousands of smiles valley-wide. His family can always plan on someone flashing their beautiful smiles expressing their love and appreciation for Dr. Knell's attentive orthodontic care.

On August 18, 1950 he married his "Sweetheart of Sigma Chi", Shirlee Jacobsen in the Salt Lake Temple, after she waited for him to serve his mission in the Northern States Mission. They have been blessed to have shared 68 years of marriage together. They had six children.

Jim was a very accomplished man with a brilliant mind and was an avid reader and a scholar of the Gospel. He always loved a good gospel doctrine discussion. He taught his family to embrace true principles and that Truth would always prevail. He had a passion for golf, sailing and snow skiing which he shared and taught his children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and held dearly in the hearts of many.

Survived by his devoted wife Shirlee, sons Brent, Dave (Ellen), Scott (Jacque) and daughters Carolyn and Kathy (Keven Cahoon) and his adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sister Mary Lue McCune, his loving son Jeff and his priceless grand-daughter Erica Trudy Knell.

The family would like to express their thanks to Good Shepherd Hospice and Home Options for their love and compassion over the last few months.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 12:00 pm at the LDS Chapel located at 4176 South Adonis Drive. Visitations will be held from 10:30-11:45 am prior to the funeral. Interment at the Larkin Sunset Lawn at 2350 East 1300 South.
