Lloyd George Mathis

1926 ~ 2016

Our beloved father and grandfather, Lloyd G. Mathis, 89, passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 28, 2016. Lloyd was born in Salt Lake City, on April 1, 1926 to Ivan John and Mary Parry Mathis. He married Claudia Free on June 28th, 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple. Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife Claudia.

He is survived by son: Scott L. Mathis (Margaret), Clinton, Utah, and daughter: Susan M. Voorhees, (Robert), Pine, Co. and five grandchildren, Matthew R. Voorhees, Rory S. Mathis, Ethan R. Mathis, Sophia L. Mathis, and Trajan S. Mathis. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn Olson (Norman), three brothers, Don R. Mathis (Sarah Beth), Carmichael, CA, I. John Mathis (Carol), SLC, UT, and James U. Mathis (Sylvia), SLC, UT.

Lloyd graduated from East High School in 1944 and attended the University of Utah before joining the U.S. Navy. He served in the submarine service during both World War II and the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy Lloyd returned to the University of Utah and was a lifelong Utah fan.

He worked in a diverse number of positions from an civil engineer with the DandRG Railroad to a self employed contractor. He retired from Martin Marietta Aerospace in 1990, where he worked as an estimator/engineer and contract negotiator.

A celebration of Lloyd's life will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at 2:00 PM, at Larkin Sunset Gardens Chapel, 1950 E. Dimple Dell Rd. (10600 South), Sandy, UT. Visitation will start at 12:30 PM and interment will follow the service.
