Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and teacher passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday September 4th 2019, after suffering a series of mini-strokes. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Frederick and Mildred Cox, Lynn was the only son of four children. At a young age Lynn lost his father which resulted in having to become the man of the house for his mother and sisters. He grew up in the Salt Lake valley, graduated from Granite High School and attended Utah State University. Through high school and on to college Lynn dedicated himself to the sport of football. While he was in high school his lineman coach was none other than LaVell Edwards, something he was extremely proud of.
Moving on through life Lynn spent a short time as a soldier in the U.S. Army. After being discharged he entered into a career he would spend more than half of his life working in; Law Enforcement. Being a police officer was more than a career to Lynn, it was his chosen path for life, a path where he would find coworkers that became brothers and extended family. During his law enforcement career he was a South Salt Lake Police Officer, a Detective and a Deputy Sheriff for the Salt Lake County Sheriff\s Office. As a Deputy Sheriff he was a Sergeant in charge of the motor squad, canyon patrol and other duties that he took tremendous pride in.
In 1972 Lynn was visiting friends at an apartment complex where they decided to spend the day sunbathing at the pool. While there, a young woman whom he had never met, approached with a glass of pool water and poured it all over him because she said he looked too hot. Lynn jumped to his feet and started chasing her, when she was immediately surrounded by her three children trying to protect their mom from this handsome stranger. This woman, Mari Lin would eventually become the love of his life. They married in June of 1975 and stayed madly in love for the next 44 years. During their marriage they added two more sons and continued growing their vast family with the addition of "adopted" kids; who were close friends of each of their five children. Lynn and Mari Lin worked tirelessly to provide for their family of seven working multiple jobs to ensure they provided the life for their family they had always envisioned. Lynn taught all of his children so many great and wonderful lessons throughout the years. Such as love of family, hard work, love of Country and the love he had for the great outdoors; including hunting, fishing, camping and boating. He was happiest surrounded by family and friends listening to his favorite country music at Currant Creek, Lake Powell, Strawberry and the Uinta Mountains. Upon his retirement from the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Lynn embraced playing as much golf as possible, he continued hunting, camping, fishing, boating and traveling. His greatest loves were his wife, kids, grandkids, great grandkids and all of his dogs. Lynn's legacy will live on through his loving family and all the lives he touched throughout the years.
He is survived by his loving wife Mari Lin, his children; Lisa May (Greg), Lonnie Crowell (Brenda), Michael Crowell, Dan Cox, David Cox, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, his sister Millie Ann Duffin (Dick), many "Adopted" children and grandchildren and his beloved dog Midge.
Lynn was preceded in death by his father Frederick "Ash" Cox, his mother Mildred Hunter Cox, sisters Coleen Winward, Tanya Cox, many close "brothers" and his eventual best friend Merlin "Grandad" Leishman.
His funeral service will be Saturday September 14, at the Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 Wasatch Drive at 12:00 with a viewing before from 10:00-11:30. The viewing will be Friday September 13 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2300 East 1300 South from 6-8. For full obituary go to www.larkincares.com
