Wilford Wayne Burton

1928 ~ 2018

Wayne Burton, 89, beloved husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, and friend passed away peacefully on February 12, 2018. He was born September 28, 1928 in Park City, UT to Loyd Taylor Burton and Flora Giles Burton. Wayne spent most of his childhood and adolescence in Salt Lake City, Utah, attending Madison School and Granite High School (Class of 1947).

Wayne joined the Naval Reserve in 1948, and later that year was called to serve in the Eastern States Mission. After arriving back to Salt Lake City in 1950 he resumed duties with the Naval Reserve, and was later assigned to the San Diego Training Center. From 1952 to 1954 he served on a hospital ship in Korea.

After the war, Wayne returned to Salt Lake City where he met his sweetheart, Janet Peterson. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 9, 1955.

In 1956 they moved to San Francisco to work at the Naval District Staff Headquarters. Having switched to the Air Force they were re-assigned to Geiger field in Spokane Washington.

In 1960 Wayne was transferred to Brigham Young University to work with the ROTC. In 1964 he was assigned to the 86th Air Transport Service where he became a loadmaster and logistics expert for U.S. Air Cargo Transport and made many trips to Vietnam with the Air Force. He later completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. After returning from Vietnam he served many years in the Utah Air National Guard ending his military career in 1984.

Wayne was a faithful member of the LDS church and fulfilled many callings. He enjoyed reading and learning about history, and loved spending time with his family.

Survived by wife Janet, son Krehl (Debi), daughter Julie (Jeff), 8 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Brother Blaine, sister Tessie, sister Phyllis, Brother Loyd Jr. (Reese).

Proceeded in death by daughter-in-law Beth, sister Judy, sister-in-law Ardith, brothers-in-law Phil Campbell, Howard Matthes and Bob Whitmore.

A viewing will be held Thursday, February 15 from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn located at 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City. An additional viewing will be held prior to the services Friday, February 16 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the LDS Chapel located at 2605 South 1500 East. The funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park.
