Joy Lee Smith

1940 ~ 2016

Joy Lee Butler Smith passed peacefully from this world to the next on Friday, December 9, 2016. Born July 12, 1940 to Vivian Edna Skidmore and Harry Lee Butler in Rexburg, Idaho, Joy overcame early trials and adversities and lived a life dedicated to caring for those she loved. Joy is now happily reunited with her husband, A. Jay Smith, whom she married on March 31, 1961 in the Idaho Falls Temple.

Joy loved flowers and spent much time creating beauty in the yard of each home she lived in. Born in humble circumstances, she was blessed with opportunities to travel the world with both her husband and her children. She quietly and faithfully served in many church callings and was always mindful of helping others less fortunate. Throughout her life, Joy put aside her dreams to care for those around her including her younger brother, her husband, her mother-in-law, her children and her grandchildren. In doing so, she realized her most desired goal...to create a loving family. Her selfless service and sacrifices on their behalf is her most beautiful legacy. Joy is survived by her four children, Jeff A. Smith, Dallas, TX, Jill S. Benfell (Steve), Ashburn, VA, Eric L. Smith (Toni), Salt Lake City, UT, Scott J. Smith, Atlanta, GA and her five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S., Salt Lake City on Thursday, December 15 at 11:00. A visitation will begin an hour prior. Because she was keenly aware of others who might be in need, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a local food bank on her behalf.
