Valeen Hale Bates

1920 ~ 2014

Valeen Hale Bates, 94, passed away peacefully at the break of dawn on November 18, 2014. She was born August 12, 1920 in Groveland, Idaho to Raymond S. and Faunt Killian Hale. She was the youngest of 3 children; brother Theron and sister Arba. The family moved to Pocatello, ID in 1922. Valeen married her high school sweetheart Harley S. Bates on February 24, 1939. They had 2 children; son Gary and daughter Jan. They later moved to Bountiful, UT where Valeen spent the remainder of her life.

In 1969 Valeen began her career in interior design. She ran her own business: Valeen Bates Interior Design Associates from 1977 thru 1984. She was an accomplished designer, winning many awards. Her talents allowed her to work abroad decorating homes in Kuwait and England. She loved to travel and enjoyed the wonders of ancient art and architecture worldwide. She was also an excellent self-taught watercolor artist. Her beautiful paintings hang in many homes of her family and friends. She was an active member of the LDS church holding many positions throughout her life including leaderships in Primary, Relief Society and served as Stake Young Women's President.

She is survived by her daughter Jan (Shan), 2 grandchildren; Holly Thompson and Camille (Jon Byxbe) Jordan, their Mother Dena (Ray) Thompson and 2 great grandchildren; Alea and Jace Jordan. She is also survived by 5 "furry" grandchildren; Maggie, Cooper, Phoebe, Daphne, Willow and 2 "furry" great grandchildren; Tucker and Tilly. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harley, son Gary, brother Theron and sister Arba.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at The Inn at Barton Creek and Intermountain Home Care Hospice for the gentle and loving care given to Valeen. She was also fortunate to have three great friends; Ruth, Elaine and Myrne visiting her weekly.

At Valeen's request private services were previously held. Interment will be in Bountiful City Cemetery.
