Carol Diane Smith Hayward

1938 ~ 2015

Our beautiful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend and niece returned to our Heavenly Father on Sept. 5, 2015. Carol was a ray of sunshine and a delight to all with whom she came in contact. Her life was richly blessed by one dear brother, John Smith. He preceded her in death. She always drew comfort and content from her younger brother, John. They were very close. He was a super "big" brother and friend who watched over her.

Everywhere she would go she was cheerful and met people with a big smile. Carol was always abounding in service for another. It made her life happy to be able to do kindly deeds for someone else. She won the Voice Of Democracy award in high school on the debate team. She was a voice for good her entire life. Always finding the best in people and giving them complements. Carol always shared her love, care and was non-judgemental of others. She really had a gift for making a person feel special! Her smile would light up any room and her spirit was like that of her Savior. Our mother had His image in her countenance. Her soul radiated goodness in all that she did. She left an example of self-less love and care for her own dear mother for many years. Her love was given even when it may not have been convenient or comfortable.

Carol was a hard working mother both in the home and out. She always managed to happily work full time outside of the home and have a delicious dinner on the table for her family. Over the years Carol worked at Deseret Pharmaceutical, Hillcrest High School, Young Electric Sign co. and she most loved her last employment with Delta Airlines where she was the office manager for Flight Safety and the pilots that trained all other Delta pilots. She will be remembered for many home cooked meals, which were abundantly shared with so many! One of her talents and loves was to bake. Marlin and Jamie loved all her dishes but lovingly remember her raspberry cream cheese jello salad. Her children fondly remember walking up to the house or returning there to the aroma of something sweet just coming out of the oven. Carol always had cookies, cakes, brownies or a yummy treat waiting for her family, as well as visitors and friends. It was rare for anyone to enter her home without a meal, treat or something yummy to partake of. Carol loved "good" chocolates, not just any chocolate. We fondly remember sharing a bite or two and then putting it back in the box for later enjoyment.

Some of Carol's talents were decorating for holidays and treat making in our home. She set a lovely table that was always inviting and brought joy and the spirit into our home. It was always important to her to have a neat, tidy home and she always looked nice herself. Even in her latter, more challenging days, she liked to make sure her appearance was one of elegance and she was always classy. Her sweetness was felt by many, especially her children by leaving notes in their lunches, reminding them daily of their worth and that we were children of God. Cooper said he always liked to take cold lunch because he looked forward to the personal note on his napkin and the "OV" that they shared. Holly remembers fondly mom reminding her daily that she is a daughter of God.

Mom loved to play the piano. We all enjoyed listening to her share her love for music. It brought a sweet spirit into our home. It brought great joy to sit and relax, while taking in her beautiful music. She also left a great example and legacy of journal writing. She has 12 volumes of journals in which she kept during her dear life. Staying up late to watch television and journal write was something she did nightly. Because her life was abundantly filled with service to others she would frequently fall asleep in front of the TV while writing in her journals. She's remembered saying " I'm not sleeping, I'm just resting my eyes". A good game of Scrabble or other board games were frequently enjoyed with our family. Julie remembers taking calligraphy classes with mom. She wrote beautifully with those pens and shared that talent by writing beautiful notes to people. Crocheting was also an enjoyable hobbie she did to relax. Aerobics was an important part of Mom's life. It was something she enjoyed doing for herself and together with her daughters. She always taught us to take good care of our bodies, that they were special to us and we only have one, so to cherish it and love it.

Carol's life has left a lasting impression and legacy to so many. She is remembered by her children being found kneeling by her bed in fervent prayer. She found great strength and peace reading her scriptures daily. They were books very dear to her. She had a testimony of their truthfulness and shared it with her family frequently. She would mark and comment in them as she read and studied. They are now a treasure! Carol touched so very many lives. Even during her last few years she was eager to share what was hers and give what she could to others. Her life will be fondly and sweetly cherished by so many. She has blessed us with a legacy of service and love.
