Clinton Sherwood Butterfield passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family, following years of enduring health challenges.
Clint was born on November 12, 1943, to James Sherwood and Gwendolyn Bowen Butterfield. He was a lifelong resident of Herriman, Utah, where he held a deep appreciation for his pioneer heritage. He graduated from Bingham High School and attended Westminster College.
Raised in a farming and ranching family, Clint developed a strong work ethic at an early age. As a young boy, he assisted his father in delivering eggs before school and eventually assumed responsibility for the route himself. By the age of twelve, he was actively working on the family farm, plowing fields and contributing to daily operations. He possessed a lifelong affinity for driving, which led him to various occupations, including delivering for a catering company while attending college. He later began a career at Kennecott as a train brakeman and subsequently as a welder. During a labor strike, his passion for driving led him to spend the majority of his professional life as an owner-operator, driving an 18-wheeler. Even after being compelled to retire due to health concerns, Clint remained industrious, dedicating more than a decade to farming and ranching alongside his brother, Cloyd.
Clint carried himself with quiet strength, humility and embodied the rugged spirit of a true cowboy. He was widely recognized for his diligence and steadfast work ethic; however, he was most deeply admired for his devotion to his family. He worked tirelessly to provide for his children and led by example, instilling in them the enduring values of hard work, determination, and perseverance. He believed strongly in personal responsibility and taught his children to take ownership of their lives and their success. He took particular pride in raising strong, capable daughters and encouraging each of his children to be independent and self-reliant.
For a time, he was a single father to Trisha and Andrea. His family later expanded with the addition of LeAnn. He subsequently married Cathy, uniting their families welcoming Betty, Lynn, Kim, Jamie and Rick. Together they had two additional children, Nicole and Natalie. Clint held a deep and abiding love for each of his children and took great pride in their lives.
He was also a devoted and caring grandfather who cherished time spent with his grandchildren. He took great joy in teaching them ranching, animal training and care, as well as fundamental life lessons. He led by example, instilling in them the values that guided his own life. Clint also enjoyed playing pool and was always willing to share his knowledge of billiards with anyone interested. Each of his grandchildren’s lives has been enriched by the time they spent learning from their grandfather.
Despite enduring significant health challenges, Clint faced them with stoicism and resilience, seldom voicing complaint and often remarking, “It could be worse.” Though reserved in nature, his wit and understated humor were cherished by those who knew him and will be deeply missed.
Clint is survived by his children: Trisha, Andrea, Lynn (Nadine), Kim, Jamie (Myreen), LeAnn (Dave), Rick (Tara), Nicole (Brandon), and Natalie (Jason). He is also survived by his sister sister Judy Funk (Alan), and brothers Cloyd Butterfield (Saida) and Cleon Butterfield (Marci), 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who all brought him great joy and a profound sense of fulfillment. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Cathy; his parents; his daughter, Betty Michael; and his great-granddaughter, Zoe Lyn Day.
The loss experienced by his family is profound and cannot be fully expressed in words. While they will forever cherish the time they shared with him, they find comfort in knowing he is now at peace, free from pain, and reunited with his loved ones.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary - Riverton, 3688 West 12600 South, Riverton, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Herriman City Cemetery.
