Always enjoyed working with Glade whether it be when I was working in the stores or in the the Drug Division offices. We were both from Utah county with Glade being from Payson and myself being from Springville. Glade had a calmness about him that rubbed off on the rest of us during turbulent times. I know the temple workers and Temple patrons appreciated his sincerity and service for those here on Earth and on the other side of the veil. I will miss you Glade with sincere condolences to Sherry and kids.

Obituary
Glade Irvin Ely, loving husband and father passed on June 3, 2026 in his home surrounded by those he loved. Glade was born on September 1, 1939 the son of Irvine Lafayette Ely and Clara Phylis Tiffany Ely. He was born in Payson, Utah and grew up working on farms. In his younger years he loved riding horses in Payson Canyon and camping. He loved fishing and hunting in his youth and enjoyed the peace and serenity he felt in the mountains.
By age 14 Glade was working on a farm raising hay, corn, and doing general farming work. He had a very strong work ethic, and by age 17 he was running the farm. Glade wanted to move beyond the farm and attended BYU. He met the love of his life, Sherry Lynn Miller, as a young man. He and Sherry were married on August 23, 1958 and their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity on August 24, 1959. Shortly after getting married Glade served in the Army National Guard for 4 years, and served in the Army Corps of Engineers for 1 year serving in Fort Lewis Washington.
Glade started his career working for Souvall Brothers as a merchandiser. A few years later he started working at Smith’s Corporation as a produce manager and learned the skill and art of setting displays. He was a quick study and was soon promoted to be a store manager.
He loved the art of negotiating and worked as a buyer for over 35 years working in merchandising of numerous products. He loved working with people and finding creative ways to enhance business. He built lifelong friendships with those he worked with both as co-workers and vendors. He was respected for his tenacity and interest in creating win-win outcomes. His curious nature allowed him to ask lots of questions and look for unexpected solutions.
Glade and Sherry developed a deep love for one another and raised 5 children. Glade and Sherry loved spending time with each other. Similar to the years of his youth, he enjoyed going on rides in the mountains and would spend hours driving saying, “I wonder what’s over that next ridge?”
Glade’s career allowed Sherry to be home to nurture their children. Together they were always involved in their children’s lives and provided help and assistance in their lives whenever help was needed. They enjoyed being in the mountains spending time on the lake playing water sports. Together they raised their children to be hard working, honest good human beings and taught them to believe in Jesus Christ.
Glade served in various callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. After retiring he loved working and serving in the Oquirrh Mountain Temple. He built loving relationships with his neighbors. He loved connecting with people from all walks of life and built relationships based on his desire to learn about people and their lives.
Glade is preceded in his passing by his parents Irvine Lafayette Ely and Clara Phylis Tiffany Ely, his brother and sister-in-law Blair and Toni Ely. He is survived by his loving companion Sherry and their five children; Wendy (Ingolf) de Jong, Tracy Ely, Denise Blunt, Val Ely, and Tiffany Ely. Glade and Sherry enjoy having 12 Grandchildren, and 19 Great Grandchildren.

Tributes
In my youth, Glade was my hero. At the ripe old age of 12, I worked on the farm with him for a couple of years, where he taught me how to drive. First on the tractor while he threw bales of hay on a wagon. Then a truck - at age 12! He was always very kind and polite and friendly, and was often protecting me from his brother, Blair.
Glade was a great neighbor and a stellar example of love and service to all of us. His legacy will live on and we look forward to seeing him again.
"70" years of kind loving friendship, his call with Sherry broke my heart to say good bye. Always thinking of others, loving his family and friends, hard working, will miss recounting our memories.
I am so sorry for your loss! I’m going to miss seeing the two of you together at Costco!
So sorry to hear of Glades passing. We have not known him for long but enjoyed visiting with him about his life in Herriman. Our prayers are with his family. He has graduated from this mortal life. Bless you!
Glade is a wonderful man, now home with those that preceded him, including many ward and community members. I'm sure their reunion was sweet. Our condolences to those that are mourning his loss, as he is loved by many. I was privileged to serve along side Glade for many years in the gospel. Glade is truly a humble stalwart in God's kingdom.
I had the privilege and pleasure to work as Glade’s assistant for many years. He was an amazing mentor and teacher. During our time together at Smith’s Glade always supported me through good times and tough times….. always lending an ear and providing much needed guidance and advice. I was fortunate enough to meet my husband Tim and even more blessed to have Glade step in andwalk me down the aisle. He was also a part of my amazing daughter Rylee’s life. He and his family welcomed all of us into their family and it means so much to all of us.
I recently got to spend some time with Glade and Sherry and it was truly so good for my heart.
I will always have the utmost love and respect for Glade and his amazing family.
I am hoping God will hold each of you close during this difficult time and the future.
Rest well my dear, dear friend.
With our deepest condolences…
Tim, Patti and Rylee Pierce
I met Glade when I started working at Smith's in 1979. His oldest daughter Wendy was my roommate and good friend for several years and he and his family treated me like I was part of their family. Family dinners, even Thanksgiving a couple of times are some of my greatest memories. He was like a father to me and always treated me with respect. I have a MOM and DAD picture with my husband Jim and Me with Glade and Sherry at my wedding and will cherish it forever. Even after he retired, we met for lunch several times with others who had worked with him. He was always so good to send a Christmas card or text every year, even this last year. I was at a memorial service for my brother in Seattle and so sad I was unable to attend Glade's services, but I want the entire Ely family to know how much my younger years meant to me being a small part of your wonderful family. Sherry and Wendy and all of you are in my thoughts and prayers that you will be comforted at such a difficult time. I truly love you all so much. I'd love to get together and reminisce all the good times. Love you all so much!!!! Jim and Debbie Dye
Glade was, and is an incredible man. He is the kind of person you could spend five minutes with and leaving the conversation feeling like you have known each other all of your lives.
He studied people and seemed to be able to read their souls. I have not met many people that have the ability to listen and understand as he did.
He was an extremely sensitive person. He so loved the Lord, and truly enjoyed working in the temple. He made friends so easily and he was always there for them.
He loved ice cream.
He will be missed terribly, but oh what an asset he will be on the other side.
