Obituary
Well, I've finally made it.
I’ve recently relocated to a permanent address with perfect weather, where I can finally find my keys, remember every lyric to every song, and never have to do taxes again. And yes, after all these years, I finally got my driver’s license back.
The first thing I did when I got here was look for family.
I found my brother Tom, my mom and dad, Howard and Mary Simkins, my little sister Joyce (who I finally got to meet), and my in-laws, Eph and Irene Furness.
And you won’t believe who I ran into.
Grandpa Greg had just arrived, too.
He recognized me immediately because I was wearing Kendall’s homemade bracelet.
My story started on May 27, 1949, in Panguitch, Utah. A few years later, Tom and I got a new baby sister, Liz. She’ll probably tell you I was her favorite brother.
Growing up, I was always doing something. Basketball, track, rodeo, student government—you name it. I served as student body president at Piute High, and spent plenty of time around the rodeo grounds. Later I headed off to Weber State University, where I was a competitive bareback and bull rider. I was also the fraternity president of Tau Kappa Epsilon TKE.
Then one day everything changed.
I met the most beautiful girl in the entire world.
Her name was Jeanette Furness.
From the moment I saw her, I was done for.
She was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Together, we built a life that took us from St. George to Orem, Sandy, Honolulu, and eventually back home to Sandy. We raised kids, attended more ball games and dance recitals than I can count, served in church, made lifelong friends, and somehow managed to squeeze in plenty of boating along the way.
Some of my favorite memories were spent on the water with family and friends, laughing, pulling kids behind the boat, telling stories, and pretending I knew exactly what I was doing.
As for my career?
Well…
I sold toilets.
Not exactly glamorous, but it paid the bills, put food on the table, and helped us build a wonderful life. I was blessed to work with incredible people at Cedar Builders, Familian Pipe and Supply, Plumbing Specialties, Mountain West Marketing, and Peterson Plumbing. What I’ll remember most are the friendships.
However, the greatest blessing of my life was my family.
Monica and Rob got us started on the grandparent adventure with Jaxon and Savannah. We made countless trips to Texas, watching baseball and softball.
Traci added Maile, Noa, and Jack to the crew. I loved every chance I got to visit them in Hawaii. Maile, sweetheart, I’m sorry I missed your wedding. We’ll celebrate together someday.
Erin and Josh built a beautiful family with Gaige, Kace, Alyssa, Taylor, and Brynlee. Watching all of you love and support one another made me proud.
Then Rachel and Zach gave us Bodie and Sienna Irene. They also gave me one of my favorite memories: officiating their wedding. Thank you for putting up with my Princess Bride impressions. It was worth it.
And Blake and Michelle rounded things out with Milo, Ricky, and Kendall. Thanks for saving me from our house full of women!
To my caregivers:
Thank you to Cyndie Albert with Willow Canyon Living for helping ease me into the “memory-care” life.
My greatest gratitude goes out to the nurses, caretakers, residents, and entire staff at Crescent Senior Living for taking care of me, befriending me, and loving me.
I couldn’t have made it to the other side without you!
To my sister Liz:
I’m sorry you’re the only sibling left down there.
Try not to have too much fun without us.
To my kids:
Thank you for the laughter, the memories, the phone calls, the vacations, and for always making me feel loved.
You were the greatest accomplishment of my life.
To my grandkids:
I hope you always know how proud I am of each one of you.
And finally, to Jeanette.
My sweetheart.
The love of my life.
I never wanted to leave you.
Even on my last day, I was trying to bike my way out of memory care because I wanted to get back to you.
Thank you for loving me through every season of life.
Thank you for standing by me when things got hard.
Thank you for building a beautiful family with me.
Thank you for being my best friend.
If Alzheimer’s taught us anything, it’s that love lasts longer than memory.
So don’t remember me for Alzheimer’s.
Remember me for the rodeo.
Remember me for barking.
Remember me for hiiiiiiii-yah!
Remember me for scaring everyone.
Remember me for family vacations.
Remember me for dancing and laughter.
And most of all, remember me for loving all of you.
If a Bread song comes on the radio, turn it up and sing every word for me.
Cheers, everybody.
Until we meet again.
Love,
Dad (Bruce)

Tributes
There will only ever be one Bruce Simkins. He truly was a legend. I didn't know what teasing was until I met Bruce. his quick whit and playful sense of humor were unmatched! He had the gift for making people laugh, and he could turn an ordinary moment into a memory that would be talked about for years. I love you Bruce!! Thank you for making the making the world a brighter place! . Susan Hill
I have great memories of my high school years and Bruce is a big part of those memories. I am so glad that we got to see each other at our class reunion a few years ago. He was. A fun spirit and I’m sure he is carrying that fun on with those on the other side.
My condolences to all of you
Bruce was like a big brother to me. We first met when he moved into our neighborhood shortly after we had moved in . We managed to raise our kids together and had lots of fun times together. Bruce was a perfect example of kindness to everybody he met. Never seemed to judge anybody.
Besides family, friends and church. We also had our business connection. I was a young, small plumbing contractor. And Bruce always included me in corporate events and trips.as though I was somebody important. Times when my business was struggling or had problems. Bruce always put me in touch with the right people to get me back on track. as a result, we spent lots of time together out of town on trips having great wonderful times snd laughs as room mates . Love Mike Grateful we will hang out again down the road
I was so sad to read this obituary. I went to high school with Bruce. He was such a fun guy. Condolences to the family.
Your family has our deep condolences. Sending love.
Aunt Janet and Uncle Mark
Although we didn’t know Bruce personally, we were able to see the light and love he put out into the world through his daughter, Monica. He raised a smart, caring, thoughtful, hardworking, beautiful daughter and from this tribute, it sounds like that is what he would be the most proud of.
Our condolences go out to all of his friends and family. Love- Monica and Rob’s EliteCare Family
Michelle and Blake. May your hearts and souls be comforted as you navigate the difficult time of losing your fathers. They are good and honest men who loved you! Know that you and your children are well loved. Your dads will be missed. Keep their memory close. Love you guys!!
I’m very sorry to hear this. i always loved talking to Bruce. He really was a true gentleman and a great example. Prayers go out to all the family and friends.
To Jeanette and family so sorry to hear about Bruce‘s passing my deepest condolences to all of you.he was more than a boss to me I was proud to call him a friend and I confident his sense of humor was always appreciated. I still have a family picture that was on a Christmas card that I received from your family many many years ago from Hawaii. He’s always so proud of his family.
I've never met your father or any of you; however, reading his beautiful obituary made me love him as if he were a family member. What a blessing to come home to love this.
Bruce, our good friend and neighbor — we still smile every time we think of the day you and Jeanette moved across the street from us in Hawaii Kai with your five children. What a blessing that was.
From beach barbecues, watching whales up at Spitting Caves, and countless other activities, our families became forever linked. The love, laughter, and memories we shared remain strong. Together, we’ve been blessed with three wonderful grandchildren who carry pieces of your humor, energy, and big heart.
Bruce, you had the best sense of humor of anyone we’ve ever known. We can still hear you calling out “Crisco, Crisco!” in the middle of a quiet movie theater just to make Jeanette laugh. That playful spirit lit up every room you entered.
You were a true friend — kind, quick-witted, and always ready with a story or a helping hand. Time with you was guaranteed to include laughter and good memories.
You lived a full life — from your rodeo days and diving adventures (you are the only person we know who had to go into a decompression chamber) to raising a beautiful family and loving Jeanette through every season, including the hardest ones. You’re right: love lasts longer than memory. That truth brings us comfort today.
We will miss you, Bruce. Thank you for the friendship, the laughs, and the forever family connection. We’ll keep turning up the Bread songs and remembering you with smiles and gratitude. Aloha… until we meet again.
With love and deepest condolences,
Rob & Mary Lou Hardisty

My personal memories extend back 40 years as we both worked together but separated by different states as regional managers of Familian Pipe Bruce in the Utah - Hawaii territory myself in Nevada As well a few other western states. We conversed mostly about friends family some work but good times, I often would do my best to fulfill a Hotel and show requests for Bruce and his wonderful wife we ended up switching territories me given Utah Bruce moving to Hawaii I never could have grown business in Utah without his guidance of the close knit connections he had built Bruce shall be missed by everyone he touched God Bless my friend 🙏
Way too many to cover here. In my teenage years, Bruce was the “Biggie Rat,” Tom Bird was “Itch” And I was “Fats.” We had some wonderful times on the “Big Flat” mountain. He and I, with Bruce Fullmer and Bobby Black formed a little “rocknroll” band and played for several dances at Purple Haze. I just want to give Janette and Bruce’s
family a warm hug and “thank you.” He meant much to the Simkins Family in Circleville. Through many experiences with Bruce in his youth (and a few later on) , I hope I qualify to send Love!
To Jeanette and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Bruce. His obituary is so typical of him. It’s filled with humor, love and he’s one step ahead of everyone. I was in his class in high school. He was our leader and was talented in so many ways. We all loved him and trusted him. We pray you may be blessed with peace and comfort.

Loved talking to Bruce, he was always asking about my kids in sports then he would talk non stop about his grandkids. He was a proud grandpa for sure. He will be remembered.

Dear Simkins Family. We enjoyed reading this special and honorable tribute to Bruce. Well done family !
We send prayers and love plus encouragement for the family. We knew Bruce through his brother Tom and family as Colleen is Patti’s sister. Ralph was a roommate with Bruce at Weber State. They had some good fun together. We were at family events with Simkins and in Panguitch as he visited. We will always remember Bruce for his smiles, laughter and quick wit. He was such a great and fun guy. Bless you all as you miss him but remember he is now at peace and free of his earthly disadvantages of health issues. He is reunited with his family and enjoying that reunion. He is now home with God and Christ. Sending Prayers. Ralph and Patti Green.
Jeanette and family I was so saddened to hear this news this morning. My heart felt condolences to you his wife and your wonderful children. Bruce and I first met at Familian Pipe in Provo, Utah where he offered a recent college graduate a job. I like him made a career out of selling toilets for 45 plus years, It was like he said not glorious but paid the bills. Bruce took me under his wing taught me everything he knew about selling plumbing material, which by the way was not much. It was with his friendship , his mentoring and love and kindness that I was able to become very successful in the industry. We went to a lot of conventions together with our friends and wives always having a wonderful time. Bruce and Jeanette thank you for all the love and kindness you showed me over the years. upon hearing the news this morning I grabbed my golf clubs and headed to the course to honor Bruce . We spent a lot of time on the golf courses playing with plumbing friends. While playing this morning I could his words of encouragement "Come on Benny just hit ball straight." Bruce I will mss your smile, your words of advice and your telling me we both stink at golf. I have so many memories that I will hold close to my heart of you and Jeanette. Love you brother someday maybe we play the back nine together again.
I’ll always remember Bruce’s smile and incredible wit. Richard and I loved having your family as close neighbors for many years. I’m also so happy that Erin and our Tyler have remained friends for many years and still keep in touch. In fact, Tyler and I both felt a personal healing as we each tearfully read Bruce’s obituary and couldn’t help but think of when Kevin passed away almost 34 years ago when Tyler was only 13… that perhaps Kevin would have said something similar in a letter to Tyler, Stacy and me if he had known in advance of his pending death ♥️
I had the pleasure of working for Bruce at Ferguson, and along side Bruce as a competitor for many years. Regardless of the timing Bruce took the time to make me feel welcomed and loved. He was one of the few men who treated everyone the same, regardless of who they were. I am grateful that I was able to know Bruce, but know that his heavenly welcome was grand indeed. May God bless your family during this time!
Blake and Michelle
We are very sorry for the loss of Blake’s father but we are excited for him to be freed from the pains and frustration that have been so heartbreaking in his final months and years.
May you find peace and happiness in the memories of his rich and exciting life. And may you feel the healing influence of our Savior.
Larry and Sheila.
Sending caring condolences and prayers to all of the family. I have very fond memories of time with Bruce. He was my hero. He taught me so much about rodeo, playing the guitar and sharing his many talents for me to learn. I will always cherish my memories.
