William John Marshall Dalgliesh

1937 ~ 2022

William John Marshall Dalgliesh, age 85, passed away at home on October 8, 2022. Bill was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 11, 1937 to Dr. W. Harold Dalgliesh and the Reverend Betty Dalgliesh.

Bill grew up in Salt Lake City and attended Wasatch Elementary School, Bryant Junior High, and East High School. In 1959, he graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. In 1965 Bill left the Navy and attended the University of Utah Law School where he graduated at the top of his class, received his Juris Doctorate and was an attorney for over fifty-five years in Salt Lake City.

Bill was a beloved husband of 59 years to Judy Paterson, who he met at a family wedding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where it was love at first sight. Their strong and loving marriage set the example for their children and for many others. Bill is survived by his wife Judy, children Susan (Jeff) Rubin, Victoria (Mike) Kanaley, Mary-Martha (Patrick) Tripeny, Sarah (Brian) Comstock, Andrew Dalgliesh (Tracy Stitt), grandchildren Leigh, Kate, Tess, Anna, Rose, Abe, Fred, Caroline, Will, and Andrew, and his sister Margaret Broun and his loving nephew and nieces. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Betty Dalgliesh.

Family was everything to Bill. He attended his children’s music and sporting events and was always ready to work on a puzzle or play bridge with his grandchildren. Fourth of July and Christmas were favorite holiday celebrations, and there was always room for more at the table. As an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, he attended church regularly and served as Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah from 1971-1977. As an avid University of Utah fan, he was a member of the Crimson Club and attended both the football and basketball games from early childhood through last year. Family and friends loved Bill’s warmth, his incredible intellect and his wonderful wit and dry sense of humor. Bill was an inspired reader of history, an avid stamp collector, and loved driving in the Wasatch Mountains with Judy. He will be sorely missed, but his love of family traditions will continue to live on through his family.

A visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, October 21, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E.1300 S. in Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, October 22 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 261 South 900 E. Salt Lake City, Utah. For those who wish, a donation may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children - Salt Lake City, 1275 East Fairfax Road, Salt Lake City, UT 84103.

So saddened at the passing of Sarah’s father. What will the boys do without their wonderful grandfather? Thank goodness they had quality time with him.
