Catholic funeral services in Utah
We work with your parish so the vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the committal happen in the order the Church keeps.
The day follows your tradition
A Catholic funeral is three movements: the vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal. The priest and the parish lead them. Larkin makes the practical day match that order for families in Salt Lake City, Sandy, Riverton, and across the Diocese of Salt Lake City.
Many of the Catholic families we serve pray in Spanish as well as English. Staff who speak both languages can sit with you for the arrangements, and we are used to a velorio and a rosario that welcome a wide circle of family.
The rites, in the order your parish keeps
Tell us which parish, and we will call with you or wait for the priest's direction.
The vigil
The vigil, often with the rosary, may be at the parish, at our chapel, or at home. We set the room simply — a cross, candles, and flowers your family actually wants — and we stay out of the prayer.
The Funeral Mass
The Mass is at your church. When the priest asks that the body be present, we prepare for that, including the pall. We arrive when the parish tells us to, not on a schedule that belongs to us.
Committal
After Mass we go to the cemetery or the mausoleum for the Rite of Committal. If your family has a plot at Larkin Sunset Lawn or Larkin Sunset Gardens, we can hold the burial there. If the plot is somewhere else in Utah, we travel.
Cremation, when the Church and the family allow it
The Catholic Church permits cremation and still prefers that the body be at the Funeral Mass, and that cremated remains be buried or entombed rather than scattered or kept at home. We follow your priest. We do not suggest cremation as a shortcut.
What we take off the family's list
- A call to the parish, with you, so the vigil, Mass, and committal are one plan.
- Bilingual arrangements in Spanish and English, including help explaining the choices to relatives who are not in the room.
- Flowers that fit a Catholic funeral, and a rosary if the family wants one placed.
- A reception after the committal at one of our locations, timed so people are not rushed out of the church.
Where the service can be held

Questions families ask
Can Larkin coordinate a Catholic funeral with my parish?
Yes. We arrange the vigil, work with your priest on the Funeral Mass, and accompany the family to the committal. The liturgy stays with the parish.
Do you have Spanish-speaking staff for a velorio or rosario?
Yes. Spanish-speaking staff can meet with the family and help the gathering feel like home for relatives who are more at ease in Spanish.
Is cremation allowed at a Catholic funeral?
It can be, with your priest's guidance. The usual hope is that the body is present at Mass and that the cremated remains are buried or placed in a mausoleum. We will not treat scattering as the plan unless your priest and your family have already decided otherwise.
Can the Funeral Mass be at the Cathedral of the Madeleine or another parish?
Yes. The Mass is at the church you and the priest choose, anywhere we can travel in Utah. Our role is to get there on the parish's time.
Other traditions we serve
Tell us what your faith requires.
Call, including in the middle of the night. We will ask what your clergy and your family need, and we will arrange the day around that.
